Reuters - Middle-aged people with low levels of so-called good cholesterol may be at higher risk for memory decline that could foreshadow Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia, European researchers said on Monday.

Antioxidant supplements have long where to purchase ascorbic acid touted to provide anti aging medicinal benefits. But do they really have such properties? Can someone really avoid aging or at least slow down the process just by taking some simple supplements?

Before we find out if these supplements can do what they have been promoted to be able to, we need to understand what the aging process is. When we age, our skin starts to sag. Our muscle tissues and bone growth will drastically slow down after a certain age, and our brain function and reflexes start to experience deterioration gradually. This can be brought on through the contribution of free radicals.

Free radicals are the one of the primary agents of aging. When we breathe in oxygen and other substances such as smoke, they are oxidized to produce free radicals, which then attack our muscle tissues and cellular structures. The end result is obvious - diseases such as heart abnormalities, cancer, ill health and also the breaking down of our body as a whole through the cycle of aging.

Antioxidants are the particles that can prevent oxidation. They stop free radicals from forming by balancing out the chemical formation through provision of an extra electron. Therefore, with a greater number of antioxidants in your body, it can greatly reduce the production of free radicals. In turn, your body will be protected by the ravages of Father Time.

Based on the relationship between antioxidants and free radicals, it is now clear that antioxidant supplements can be a major weapon in the battle against aging. In fact, these substances are not chemically toxic and can be commonly found in everyday foods like fresh fruits and vegetables.

Antioxidant supplements can readily come in the form of Vitamins C and E, or various minerals like selenium and zinc. Another popular form is in that of beta carotene, which is a type of carotenoid. They help to maintain good vision, a sure sign of youth and vitality. You can further fight off the effects of aging from high blood pressure and cholesterol levels through the use of omega 3 fish oils. This supplement is extremely effective in lowering the incidence of these conditions.

Thus, if you wish to maintain a youthful vigor and energy despite racking up the years, consider using antioxidant supplements to provide an edge over aging. Anti aging has never been easier and safer.
